Do I need psychotherapy?

You are the best person to answer this question. If you think you'd like to talk with someone about a problem you can't seem to solve on your own, this in itself is reason enough to seek out the help of a therapist.

In contrast to going to a ‘Allgemeinarzt‘ or General Physician, the healing process involved in talk therapy is not a passive, one-directional relationship where you receive 'care' from an expert. Instead, you will be expected to actively work with your thoughts, feelings, behavior patterns and ‘repertoire’. This will require bravery on your part. Curiosity towards yourself and others is also an important attitude, as is an attitude of openness. We will be trying to understand you, and that is not possible without your help.

This begs the question, what if you don’t know exactly what you need help with? Sometimes what is bothering people is only experienced as a general diffuse feeling of something being 'wrong'. In these cases, seeing a Psychologist can help define, clarify and give a name to what is going on. Being able to understand what is going on and what felt 'wrong', can in itself greatly reduce your personal level of suffering, even if 'the problem itself' and symptoms remain unchanged.

It is also possible to apply for an initial meeting where the only goal is to find out together if therapy is the right option for you and your situation. Don't hesitate to get in touch even if you’re just ‘therapy curious’.
